In-depth guide: Reddit Markdown Formatter & Preview

Practical guidance that matches how Reddit communities actually work, written specifically for this tool.

Reddit formatting cheat sheet

  • Bold: **text** · Italic: *text* · Bold italic: ***text***
  • Strikethrough: ~~text~~ · Superscript: ^word or ^(several words)
  • Spoiler: >!text!< · Inline code: `code`
  • Heading: # Large, ## Medium, ### Small (at the start of a line)
  • Bullet list: - item · Numbered list: 1. item
  • Quote: > quoted text · Horizontal line: ---
  • Link: [link text](https://example.com)
  • Code block: indent every line with four spaces, or wrap it in ``` fences
  • Table: | A | B | then |---|---| then | 1 | 2 |

Why formatting matters on Reddit

Reddit readers skim. A long post that's one block of text gets scrolled past; the same content with a short bold summary, a few headings and a list gets read and upvoted. In professional subreddits, the most-saved posts are usually the best-structured ones: a clear opening, numbered steps, and a table when there's data to compare.

Formatting also helps with rules. Many communities ask for a TL;DR, specific flair or no links in the body. Previewing your post first makes it easy to check that everything is where it should be.

Fancy Pants editor vs Markdown mode

New Reddit's default editor (often called the Fancy Pants editor) formats text with buttons and converts what you type. If you paste Markdown into it, the symbols may show up literally. Switch the editor to Markdown mode before pasting, or use the buttons in the Fancy Pants editor to reapply the formatting.

If you want to go one step deeper, pair this with Reddit Audience Persona Generator and Reddit Niche Finder. If you'd rather have the strategy executed end-to-end, see Reddit post promotion service or Reddit comment marketing service.

When this works best

These are real scenarios where the tool helps you move faster, without sacrificing authenticity.

Long, structured posts

Use headings, lists and tables so a detailed post is easy to scan, which is what tends to get upvoted in professional subreddits.

Checking formatting before posting

Catch broken tables and lists before they go live, especially when pasting from a doc.

FAQ

Reddit Markdown Formatter & Preview: Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the free Reddit Markdown Formatter & Preview tool on GrowReddit.

Reddit uses Markdown. Wrap text in **double asterisks** for bold, *single asterisks* for italics and ~~tildes~~ for strikethrough. Start a line with - for a bullet, 1. for a numbered list, > for a quote and ## for a heading. On new Reddit, switch the editor to Markdown mode to type it directly.
Write the header row with pipes, then a separator row of dashes, then the data rows: | Name | Score | |---|---| | A | 10 | Leave a blank line before the table. The Table button inserts this layout for you.
Wrap the text in >! and !<, for example >!the ending!<. It shows as a blacked-out block until someone clicks it.
A single line break is ignored. Leave a blank line to start a new paragraph, or end the line with two spaces (or a backslash) to force a line break inside a paragraph.
Post titles can be up to 300 characters, text post bodies up to 40,000 characters and comments up to 10,000. The counter here shows how close you are to the body or comment limit.
Very close. The preview supports the formats people use most. A few things differ by app, such as how wide tables can get on mobile, and very old Reddit and third-party apps can render some edge cases differently.
